Dodgers Rumors: Insider Believes LA Could Lose Top Assistant to Interstate Rival

Could LA have a say in this open position?
In this story:

While the Dodgers don’t have much to do with who their cross-town rivals in the Los Angeles Angels pick for their open manager position, they may end up getting some say in things.

Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times has listed Dodgers assistant Ron Roenicke as a potential candidate for the Angels open managerial position. Roenickle has been with LA since 2021 and hasn't managed since 2020 when he was with the Boston Red Sox for one year.

“The Dodgers special assistant, who is from Los Angeles, told The Times this week he is not too interested in managing again, but would consider an opportunity if it meant staying in Southern California.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

The Dodgers would have some say in things because if the Angels wanted to even speak with him, they would have to ask for permission from LA. There really isn’t any reason why the Dodgers wouldn’t allow an interview to happen, but you never know.

“If there was interest, the Angels would need permission from the Dodgers to interview Roenicke.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

If Roenicke is hired by the Angels, it would be his third stint as a manager in the big leagues. In addition to his one year with the Red Sox, he was the manager for the Milwaukee Brewers for four years between 2011-2015.

Even with a few years under his belt, he has never managed a team to the postseason, so it may not be a good match with an Angels squad that hasn’t reached the playoffs since 2014. The team may go a different route, and try to get someone who is more successful at this level.

It’s been reported that Halos owner Arte Moreno prefers a more veteran manager to lead the club next season, and Roenicke could fit that bill. In addition, he does have connections with the Halos organization. He has been their third base coach multiple times, and he was with the team when they won their only World Series title in 2002.

Roenicke knowing how the Angels run things, namely how Moreno runs things, could give him a bump up if the team were to interview him. But it’s interesting that his name was mentioned as a possibility, and it’ll be interesting to see if the Halos do indeed try to interview him.
