As the Angels enter into their offseason, their first order of business is finding a new manager after letting Phil Nevin go. It could prove to be tougher than it seems, though, since the Halos haven’t seen much success on the field as of late.

They also could be losing two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani this offseason, which would be their biggest bargaining chip to potential candidates.

LA Times columnist Sarah Valenzuela listed multiple candidates for the Halos open managerial position, and included someone from the Halos' interstate rival in Los Angeles. Dodgers special assistant Ron Roenicke is a name to watch out for, according to Valenzuela.

“The Dodgers special assistant, who is from Los Angeles, told The Times this week he is not too interested in managing again, but would consider an opportunity if it meant staying in Southern California.”

Roenicke could make some sense for the Angels, especially if they want a more veteran manager to lead the club in 2024. He likely wouldn’t manage for more than a few years, so the Angels could try to maximize things with him.

But if they did want to interview him, they would need to make sure the Dodgers were okay with it.

“If there was interest, the Angels would need permission from the Dodgers to interview Roenicke.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

Los Angeles would likely allow Roenicke to take the interview, and they would be happy for him if he got the job. It would be his third stint as a manager in Major League Baseball after he led the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011-2015 and Boston Red Sox during the 2020 shortened season.

He has never reached the postseason during his managerial career, so that could hurt his chances with the Halos. The organization hasn’t made the playoffs since 2014, so they may want someone with a little more experience and success to take over.

Roenicke does have a connection with the Angels, however, as he was a long-term coach for the organization.

“He’s familiar with the Angels’ front office and ownership, having served as a longtime coach for and won a World Series with them — the Angels’ only championship — in 2002.”

Per Sarah Valenzuela of The LA Times

This could be a bonus in his favor since he does know how things work with owner Arte Moreno. So, it remains to be seen if the Angels will interview him, but it feels like they may want to get someone that they can build around moving forward.
