Dodgers Rumors: Insider Expects LA to Move On From 3 Relievers This Offseason
The Los Angeles Dodgers have options on nine players this offseason, and they need to decide whether they want to exercise them or not. Most of them are easy decisions. Including the multi-million dollar options on a trio of injured relievers in Blake Treinen, Daniel Hudson, and Alex Reyes.
Since the end of the 2021 postseason, Treinen hasn’t pitched much for the Dodgers as he battled a right shoulder injury. In the 2022 season, Treinen tried to avoid shoulder surgery and pitched in a limited number of games. After a disastrous 2022 postseason, he underwent right shoulder surgery and tried to return during the 2023 season. Since he wasn’t able to bounce back adequately, he couldn’t pitch for the Dodgers at any time during the 2023 season.
No one honestly knows if Treinen can pitch in the major leagues again. The exact terms of his option are not known publicly, but it's reported to be between $1-$7 million, depending on games pitched and performance.
When Daniel Hudson returned to the Dodgers in the 2022 season, he was a terrific setup man. In June 2022, he tore his ACL while on the mound in Atlanta. He underwent surgery but was expected to be nearly ready to pitch again by opening day 2023. A myriad of issues kept the veteran off the big league mound until late June 2023, but he sprained the MCL in his other knee during the third game he pitched. He tried to return, but at 36, Hudson couldn’t.
He's weighing retirement as the Dodgers are likely to decline his $6.5 million option.
And finally, Alex Reyes signed a one year deal with the Dodgers that included a $3 million option for 2024. The right-hander was coming off reconstructive shoulder surgery in 2022 and hoped to recover and join the roster sometime around the All-Star break. Instead, he underwent another procedure on his pitching shoulder in June and there have been no updates since.
