Dodgers Rumors: LA Targeting Mitch Keller, Jordan Montgomery on Trade Market
It's been a solid week for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the week leading up to MLB's August 1 trade deadline, and they have some results to show for it.
They acquired utility man Kiké Hernandez, shortstop Amed Rosario, starting pitcher Lance Lynn, and reliever Joe Kelly. Those are good moves that fill some holes in LA's roster, but it's still been a deadline devoid of a big splash with two days until time runs out on the dealing bonanza.
They tried and failed to trade for Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito and swung and missed on third baseman Nolan Arenado when Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said they would not trade their All-Star infielder.
That said, the Dodgers aren't done trying to make deals just yet, and they still have their eye on the starting pitching market.
Per Jorge Castillo and Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers are interested in trading for Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star Mitch Keller and Cardinals starter Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery was rumored to be part of an Arenado swap, before the deal fell apart on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Keller would be an interesting option, but one with some risk.
Keller made his first All-Star team this season after posting a 3.31 ERA in the first half of the year. It's been anything but great for him since though, as he's recorded an 8.64 ERA in his three starts since the All Star Game. It could take a lot to acquire him, but the Dodgers have more than enough pitching depth in the organization to make a trade happen, and right-hander Gavin Stone -- the Dodgers' top pitching prospect -- has seen his name float around the rumor mill of late.
In Montgomery, the Dodgers would have a more clear idea of who they'd be getting, and he's posted a solid 3.42 ERA in 2023. He'd also likely be a little cheaper than Keller, and the Dodgers could hypothetically swing him for No. 8 prospect Nick Frasso and potentially No. 2 prospect in infielder Michael Busch, who's been blocked from consistent playing time in LA this season.
The Dodgers still have some time left until the deadline hits in just over 48 hours, and we'll see if LA continues to add to their rotation before the season's stretch run.
