Former Dodgers GM Gets a Lucrative Contract Extension with NL West Team

He's not going anywhere

In 2014, your Los Angeles Dodgers signed Farhan Zaidi to be their general manager. In his three years at the helm, he made trades for players like Kiké Hernandez and Austin Barnes. He also drafted young stalwarts like Walker Buehler, Will Smith, and Gavin Lux.

After his three years, the NL West rival San Francisco Giants lured him away to be their president of baseball operations. During that time, the Giants had a 51.2% winning percentage and made the playoffs once.

That was apparently good enough to warrant a lucrative extension in the eyes of Giants ownership as the club announced on Wednesday that Zaidi would not only stay on in his current position, but be extended through the 2026 season.

The Giants finished 4th in the NL West this year with a record of 79-83. Just days before the end of the disappointing season, they fired their manager Gabe Kapler, and, in a strange turn of events, replaced him with Bob Melvin from the Padres.

Last offseason, Farhan and company attempted to sign big-name free agents like Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa to big money long-term deals. After swinging and missing on those free agents, fans hope the front office to be in play for more this offseason. Expect to see links to Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and perhaps even old friend Cody Bellinger heading into the 2024 season.

Zaidi and the Giants shocked the baseball world by winning 107 games and the NL West in 2021. The front office worked their magic to make the most out of players seemingly past their prime. Take that approach, give it a deep pocket, and it's hard to ever overlook the Giants.
