The lasting image of Dodgers star Mookie Betts from the 2023 season was him going 0-for-10 with just one walk in the team's National League Division Series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

After putting together an MVP-caliber regular season, Betts failed to replicate his success in the three postseason games — an unmemorable ending to a memorable year.

Los Angeles was ultimately swept out of the playoffs, and a long offseason came about. But the Dodgers made quick work to forget the sweep by adding major talent over the offseason.

Now armed to do real damage this coming season, Betts is focused on making sure that he doesn't suffer in the postseason again. He discussed his goals for the 2024 season with SportsNet LA:

“Just to be the best Mookie Betts I can be. To go and show that I’m still good. That I can compete through the season and through playoffs. I know I didn’t do well, obviously, last playoffs and so I want to get back to where I can compete when it’s crunch time. Prove to everyone and also prove to myself that I can do it. And I believe in myself and that’s really it.”

The Dodgers need Betts to be himself throughout the season. Even though he's coming off an MVP runner-up season in 2023, not everything will fall on him. With the addition of Shohei Ohtani, some of the burden to produce runs will be taken off Betts' shoulders.

At least mentally, this might free up Betts a little bit to focus on playing the game. At 31, he's one of the best players in the league. His struggles in the playoffs were a strange contrast to his typical performance.

Betts sounds determined to make sure he shows up this time if the Dodgers return to the postseason in October. If Betts can deliver on his promise, the Dodgers will be in good shape come playoff time.
