SF Giants place OF Mike Yastrzemski on IL with hamstring strain
The SF Giants have placed outfielder Mike Yastrzemski on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Yastrzemski was forced to leave Sunday's 6-4 loss to the Padres after attempting to make a diving catch on a two-RBI double. Yaz told reporters after the game that he felt his hamstring give out on his second step on the play. Versatile Brett Wisely (Giants #22 prospect) will take his spot on the active roster. Wisely filled the extra spot on the roster the team was given for this weekend's series in Mexico City, Mexico, and will remain with the team.
Yastrzemski has been playing through some minor injuries this season and was scratched from a game last week with side tightness. However, when he's been on the field, he has been one of the Giants best players. He has recorded seven doubles and five home runs in 25 games with a .292/.333/.521 triple-slash. The Giants have been hopeful that Yaz could rekindle his 2019-2020 form for some time, and he finally seemed to be turning a corner this season.
The Giants traded outfielder prospect Tristan Peters to the Tampa Bay Rays for Wisely last offseason. Wisely hit .274/.371/.461 with 15 home runs and 31 stolen bases at Double-A last season with the Rays. An above-average athlete, Wisely was also a versatile defender, appearing at first base, second base, third base, shortstop, and left field. He has also shown off impressive potential in center field.
Wisely has appeared in 12 games with the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento this season. He has been incredibly productive, hitting .304/.467/.500 with nine doubles, three stolen bases, and nearly as many walks (13) as strikeouts (14) in 63 plate appearances. He has also not recorded an error in five games in center field.
During his stints in the majors with the SF Giants, Brett Wisely recorded his first big-league hit on Friday but was just 1-for-14 with six strikeouts. Capable of playing both center field and shortstop, he will provide manager Gabe Kapler some valuable versatility off the bench.
