Guardians Designate Noah Syndergaard For Assignment
The Cleveland Guardians cut ties with a former All-Star pitcher and Cy Young candidate on Sunday afternoon. The team notified Noah Syndergaard following his start against the Toronto Blue Jays that he was being designated for assignment.
Thor was the main piece Cleveland got in return from the Los Angeles Dodgers after they sent Amed Rosario to the West Coast. The Guardians knew they weren't getting prime Syndergaard in this deal, but they did hope he could be a successful innings eater.
Unfortunately for both sides, this wasn't the case.
Syndergaard made six starts for Cleveland posting an ERA of 5.40 and 1.29 WHIP over 33.1 innings. His biggest struggle was limiting the long ball as opponents hit a total of 10 home runs off him over this time.
Syndergaard was brutally honest and hard on himself for how he's pitched for both the Dodgers and Guardians this season and this latest roster move only complicates his future.
The move is a little surprising considering Cleveland still has a rotation full of rookies and Cal Quantrill (who will likely be activated off the IL soon) has also not looked himself. A six-man rotation that included Thor could have been beneficial for everyone, but that's off the table now.
A team that's desperate for pitching may still take a shot on Syndergaard and bring him in based on his track record from earlier in his career. As for the Guardians, they plan to make a corresponding move on Monday to fill the 40-man roster spot.
