Relive Guardians Comeback Win, Will Brennan Walk-Off Against Astros
A four-run deficit felt like an impossible task to overcome for this Cleveland Guardians team just a month ago. However, something clicked. The Guardians finally have the bats going and they're starting to pile on the wins because of it.
The Houston Astros struck first in the series opener on Friday night with a three-run bomb courtesy of Jose Abreu. Logan Allen was on the mound for the Guardians and faced some real adversity for the first time in his career.
Cleveland was down four runs before they even had a chance to bat in the third inning.
But this team never gave up. Steven Kwan and Amed Rosario each drove in runs on RBI doubles, Andres Gimenez put the ball in play to bring in a run on a sacrifice fly, and of course, Jose Ramirez homered to tie the game at five runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh.
However, the Astros wouldn't go quietly either. They retook the lead in the top of the eighth, forcing Cleveland to score or go home in the ninth inning. Score is exactly what they did.
With two strikes and two outs, Josh Naylor smoked an RBI double off the left-field wall to tie the game at six.
The Guardians and Astors went back and forth in the tenth through the thirteenth innings. When either team grabbed the lead, the other would tie it up but was unable to close it out.
However, all of that changed during the bottom of the fourteenth inning.
Tyler Freeman entered the game as a pinch runner for Josh Bell, but now he was forced to bat in one of the biggest moments of his young career. He didn't miss and hit a line drive to the wall, scoring Naylor and tied the game.
Silly Willy, Chill Will, Will Brennan then finished the game with a walk-off double, giving the Guardians the victory, 10-9.
Cleveland's win makes them the only MLB team to come back in five separate innings in the seventh inning or later. The Guardians have it rolling and the rest of baseball should watch out!
