Relive Jason Kipnis' Career Highlights As The Cleveland Legend Announces Retirement

Former Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis formally announces retirement.
In this story:

You can't tell the story of Cleveland baseball throughout the 2010s without talking about the then-named Indians' second baseman Jason Kipnis. He a part of numerous playoff teams, including one that won the American League and went to the World Series, and has cemented his name in the Cleveland record books.

Kipnis announced his retirement on Twitter on Monday evening with a letter and a collection of some of his highlights.

Kip has also received a number of tributes from around MLB since announcing his retirement.

Kipnis played in Cleveland for a total of nine seasons and made his mark on the organization. He leads second baseman in home runs with 123, is second in doubles with 252, second in stolen bases with 135, and has 529 RBI which is third among second basemen.

He also racked up 20.5 WAR which ranks third in his position. (All stats provided by @CLE_Stats on Twitter.)

Cleveland did not bring Kipnis back after the 2019 season and he elected to sign a Minor League deal with the Chicago Cubs and appeared in 44 Big League games. He also spent time in the Atlanta Braves organization before officially retiring.

The one at-bat from Kipnis' career that still haunts my memory is one that didn't even end with a hit. In Game Seven of the 2016 World Series, he hit a ball that looked like it would be a walk-off home run, but it kept hooking foul and was slightly short.

Jason was always a joy to watch on the field and brought an unmatched level of energy off of it. Enjoy the retirement Kip, you deserve it!
