Terry Francona Ejected In First Inning As Guardians Take On White Sox
Terry Francona will have to spend the rest of game three of the Cleveland Guardians-Chicago White Sox Series from the visitor's locked room after he was ejected in the first inning of Saturday evening's game.
The Guardians manager wanted to challenge a play on the field but was not given the opportunity by the umpire staff.
Jose Ramirez hit a fly ball to left field to Zach Remillard. The left fielder appeared to catch the ball and throw out Steven Kwan at first base to complete the double play. Upon replay, it did appear that the ball was caught, but Kwan also looked safe back at first.
Here's the play in question:
Cleveland wanted to have another look at it but apparently did not have enough time.
Francona stormed the field and went up to umpire Todd Tichenor and pleaded his case that he had his hands over his ears motioning he wanted to challenge the play. Tito must've said the magic word because he was quickly tossed from the game.
What made Cleveland's skipper even more upset was that Tichenor tossed him and immediately walked away. This was Francona's first ejection of the season.
Whether it was a catch, Kwan was safe, or Cleveland challenged the play in time is now irrelevant. The Guardians will have to go the rest of the game without their future Hall of Fame manager.
Cleveland's bench coach, DeMarlo Hale, will manage the rest of the game for the Guardians.
