David Fry Might Be The Player The Guardians Are Looking For
The Cleveland Guardians have been looking all season for another bat they can add to their lineup which will give them a new layer of pop. Ideally, this player can also be versatile enough to play around the diamond too.
Chirs Antonetti even said the team was searching for another complimentary bat before the trade deadline next week.
Adding another player with this skill set would be great. However, do the Guardians already have someone who can do all of these things on the roster?
David Fry is certainly making the case he can be that guy.
Let's start with the offense.
Fry has done nothing but perform since he was called up at the very beginning of May. He's currently hitting .288/.342/.493 with an OPS of .835 in 73 at-bats this season. Fry also has 13 RBI and already hit four home runs too.
His slugging percentile is also the third highest among current plater only trailing Josh Naylor and Jose Ramirez. Not bad company to be in.
What about defense?
Fry has made appearances at catcher, first base, third base, left field, right field, and pitcher (yes, even as a pitcher) during the 2023 season. Most of those games have come from behind the plate, but Terry Francona is beginning to play him more in the outfield too.
Corner outfield may not be Fry's natural position, but he's making the most of being out there making a number of nice plays.
The emergence of David Fry shouldn't stop the front office from looking to add another bat to the team. There's always room for improvement and the deeper the batting order the better.
However, adding another bat shouldn't take away what Fry has done and he deserves to keep receiving the playing time he's being given.
