Noah Syndergaard Is Exactly The Type Of Pitcher The Guardians Need
Just a few days ago, President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti said the team was looking to add another starting pitcher before the MLB trade deadline. Then on Wednesday, the Cleveland Guardians sent SS Amed Rosario to the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for SP Noah Syndergaard, according to multiple reports.
Syndergaard has had Cy Young-worthy seasons in the past such as back in 2016 and 2017 when he was with the New York Mets. However, he then bounced around the league pitching with the Los Angeles Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, and the Dodgers.
Now he takes on a new endeavor coming into a Guardians rotation full of injuries and young starters.
Thor, as he's become known as do to his long blonde hair, currently owns an ERA of 7.16 over 12 starts in 2023. That's the highest of his career (excluding 2021 when he only made two starts) and he's currently on the 15-day IL too.
The Dodgers placed him on the injured list on June 8 due to a "right index finger blister" and he's currently on a rehab assignment with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, LA's Triple-A club.
Syndergaard isn't the pitcher he once was, but he can still be serviceable for the Guardians. He's pitched 5.0 or more innings in seven of his starts, despite the high ERA.
Cleveland wasn't looking for an ace in this trade. They needed someone who could eat innings and take the load off the Guardians' young pitchers and Syndergaard is a pitcher who can do that.
This trade shouldn't be viewed as one in which Cleveland was looking to get a haul of prospects are an All-Star in return. They did it to open up playing time for Gabriel Arias, Tyler Freeman, and hopefully Brayan Rocchio.
However, they also accomplished getting a veteran pitcher who can help the rotation until the team can get healthy.
