This Is Why Triston McKenzie Was Removed From His Final Start Of Spring Training
The Cleveland Guardians kick off the 2023 season this Thursday against the Seattle Mariners. Cleveland made it to the ALDS last season and has hopes to do the exact same this season, but go beyond a second-round exit.
The last thing they need before Opening Day is an injury to the rotation. However, that may be the scenario they are dealing with.
Triston McKenzie took the mound against the Cincinnati Reds for what was supposed to be his final tune-up of Spring Training. But the pitcher was surprisingly pulled after just 1.0 inning of work in which he gave one hit and struck out one batter.
Nothing from McKenzie's solo inning of work signaled that he was dealing with any pain or struggling. However, after the game, it was revealed that he was pulled due to "right arm tightness."
There's a reason to let out a sigh of relief because the Guardians said this was purely a precautionary move.
McKenzie is scheduled to start the second game of the regular season this Friday night in Seattle. It's still unclear whether or not Dr. Sticks will be available to start in that game, but hopefully, almost a week of rest is all he needs.
Triston has a solid spring following a strong 2022 campaign. He started six games posting a 7.63 ERA in 15.1 innings of work. McKenzie has struggled with his command a little bit by walking 10 batters and striking out 16.
