Will The Guardians Give James Karinchak A Second Chance?
Everyone deserves a second chance. Right? That's the mantra we're all told growing up in order never to cut ties with someone even if they haven't been perfect in the past. However, second chances are hard to come by in sports.
The Cleveland Guardians optioned James Karinchak back on June 10 because he struggled with his command and striking out hitters.
The Guardians are currently in quite the predicament as their starting rotation is falling apart and has three rookie arms in it which is putting a massive strain on the bullpen. Even with all of this, the organization has been reluctant to bring Karinchak back to the Majors.
Is there a possibility he gets another opportunity with the team, or has that ship sailed?
Let's start with the stats.
Karinchak held a 3.90 ERA over 32 appearances before his demotion to the minors. Since then, he's pitched in 11 games while posting a 2.38 ERA. This includes 21 strikeouts and six walks.
Those numbers aren't bad, but what are the coaches saying about him?
Terry Francona mentioned on Monday that, "By all accounts, (Karinchak) has been pitching pretty well. His velocity has been down, but no issues health-wise."
Pitching coach Carl Willis had a similar evaluation of Karinchak. However, when he was asked if the righty is close to rejoining the team, Willis hesitantly said, "I think he's certainly to a point where if we have a need ... yeah, he's getting close. But again, the need has to be there."
One would think the need for Karinchak is there though. The team has already gone through two bullpen games with the injury to Shane Bieber and it appears more are on the way.
Both Francona and Willis comment that Karinchak is pitching better, but they're unwilling to give a clear answer on whether we'll see him again with the Guardians this season. It appears we'll just have to wait and see if Karinchak is given that second chance and if the need for him ever comes.
