The New York Mets could end up getting one of their most important relievers back in free agency.

Former Mets hurler Adam Ottavino recently turned down his player option and elected free agency, but that doesn't he won't return to New York in 2024. Ottavino opened up about his time in New York and the possibility of a return, according to SNY's Phillip Martinez.

“Just the way everything ended this year, (Buck Showalter) getting let go (and) (Billy Eppler) eventually being not in the picture anymore those are kind of the guys I originally signed for with the Mets, and with one year to go so much uncertainty around the team I just felt like I should keep my options open and kind of hear from all the teams before I see what happens," Ottavino said as transcribed by Martinez. "But I'm not closing any doors."

"When asked if he could return to the Mets, Ottavino said 'absolutely.'”

Ottavino has been one of the Mets' most reliable hurlers over the last two years. The 37-year-old joined the club ahead of the 2022 season and quickly has impressed. Ottavino shined in 2022 with a minuscule 2.06 ERA in 66 appearances and followed it up with a 3.21 ERA in 66 outings in 2023.

The Mets likely need to add to their bullpen this offseason and losing Ottavino would be a big hit. It sounds like he's open to a return, but it's unclear how much interest the Mets have in a new deal. Free agency officially is upon us so it won't take too long to find out. New York certainly should look into bringing back the veteran hurler.
