The New York Mets have the money to get a massive deal done but it's unclear what level the club wants to spend.

New York has gone on spending sprees over the last few years but it hasn't resulted in a World Series title. The Mets were widely expected to be contenders this season but the season fell apart and the club traded away star duo Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.

The Mets hired former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns already this offseason and it's unclear what direction he will take the club. Although this is the case, New York continues to be mentioned as a possible fit for superstar free agents. The biggest name available is Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani and the New York Post's Jon Heyman gave the Mets intriguing odds to land him.

"Steve Cohen obviously can afford it," Heyman said. "The drawback of course is that the Mets are already in the highest tax territory, meaning they’ll be taxed at 110 percent on most if not all his contract (so a $60M salary is really $126M). Some predict the Mets to be “more disciplined” after last year’s spending spree. But this is a special case. Odds: 8-1."

Ohtani has been mentioned as a fit for the Mets on multiple occasions over the last year. The Mets have more money than any other club and it has been hinted that Ohtani is open to playing on the East Coast. While Ohtani may not fit the club's exact needs for 2024 as he won't be able to pitch, he still could immensely help the club as the designated hitter.

Until Ohtani signs elsewhere he is going to be considered a fit for the high-spending Mets.
