Mets President Gives Update On Pete Alonso's Future With Team
The New York Mets will have a tough decision to make this offseason about arguably their biggest star.
Pete Alonso has found his name in rumors seemingly all season as his future with the club is unclear. The three-time All-Star is due will be a free agent after the 2024 season ends and some have wondered if he will be traded. Rumors swirled ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline that a move could happen, although Alonso ultimately remained with the team.
The two sides have been discussing an extension but if they fail to come to terms on a deal there's a real possibility he could be moved this offseason. Although this is the case, new president of baseball operations David Stearns gave a positive update on his future, as transcribed by Metsmerized Online's Mike Mayer.
“I expect Pete (Alonso) to be the Opening Day first baseman next year," Stearns said.
This certainly is the most update yet about Alonso's future with the team. He has developed into one of the best sluggers in all of baseball and a Mets fan favorite since debuting for the club in 2019. Although there is nothing set in stone and the two sides need to come to terms on a deal, this at least is an indication that the executive team expects him to be with the club moving forward.
New York will have a busy offseason as the club looks to get back to the postseason in 2024 and it sounds like Alonso could be in town for the long run.
