The New York Mets could end up landing an ace this offseason in a blockbuster trade.

The free agent starting pitching market is very deep but will be competitive this offseason. New York has been linked to multiple starters, but with all of the competition, it may be useful to explore the trade market as well. The trade market is expected to be much more active this offseason than it was ahead of the trade deadline.

One player who reportedly could be traded and be a fit for the Mets is Chicago White Sox star Dylan Cease, according to SNY's Danny Abriano.

"The White Sox are 'open for business,' (general manager) Chris Getz told reporters this week at the GM Meetings, with Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic noting that Chicago is open to trading right-handed pitcher Dylan Cease, outfielder Eloy Jimenez, and others," Abriano said. "Cease could be of interest to the Mets, who are looking to add two or three starting pitchers this offseason.

"Entering his age-28 season, Cease is under team control through 2025. He was one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2022 after a strong 2021 campaign, but regressed in 2023 while posting a 4.58 ERA."

Cease is an intriguing name to watch out for. He is just 27 years old and has the makings to be a true No. 1 starter on a playoff contender. Cease has pitched five seasons for the White Sox and has a career 3.83 ERA. He had a down year in 2023 but had a 2.20 ERA in 2022 across 32 starts and a 3.91 ERA in 2021 in 32 outings.

New York targeted extremely expensive starters on the back end of their careers over the last few offseasons. Cease is the opposite. He isn't very expensive at this time and could build with the organization for years to come. The cost to acquire him will be steep, but the Mets have a solid farm system and could get a deal done. The Mets at least should entertain the possibility.
