Will superstar slugger Pete Alonso stick around with the New York Mets for the foreseeable future?

This is the biggest question swirling around the team right now. There have been rumors that the two sides were discussing an extension and there have been rumors that he would be traded. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has said on multiple occasions that Alonso would be with the club at least in 2024, but that hasn't stopped the trade rumors from flowing.

If Alonso is traded, three teams that reportedly could be interested in acquiring the star are the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, and San Francisco Giants, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden.

"Pete Alonso has belted 86 home runs over the past two seasons and driven in 249 runs, the most in the majors," Bowden said. "The three-time All-Star is entering his age-29 season and will be a free agent at the end of next year. (Scott Boras), his agent told reporters at the (General Managers) meetings on Wednesday that he met with Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns to discuss Alonso and 'let him know that when it comes to the Polar Bear, we're not in contract hibernation.'

"We'll have to see if the Mets make any progress on an extension. Stearns, who was officially introduced right after the regular season, wants to put his stamp on the team. He is open to Alonso trade discussions and Alonso extension discussions. The Cubs, Mariners, and Giants have been rumored as possible destinations if Alonso is traded."

An Alonso trade would be devastating to Mets fans but that doesn't mean it isn't a possibility. If the two sides aren't able to come to terms on an extension this offseason, a move would become even more likely. Hopefully, the two sides can work out a new contract but if they are not, we may have seen the last of Alonso in a Mets jersey.
