Mets Reportedly Could Land Blue Jays Slugger This Offseason After Impressive Season
The New York Mets could be in the market for a new third baseman this offseason.
New York has plenty of holes to fill after a disastrous 2023 campaign. The Mets have been linked to superstars like Shohei Ohtani and Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto but there is other work to do, as well. One player who reportedly could land with the Mets is Toronto Blue Jays slugger Matt Chapman, according to The Athletic's Jim Bowden.
"Matt Chapman remains one of the best defensive third basemen in the game, Bowden said. " The three-time Gold Glove Award winner has tremendous range to all sides and is a proven power hitter, with 155 home runs over his seven-year career. His career slash line of .240/.320/.461 is representative of what to expect from him. He hit 27 home runs in 2021 and 2022 but only 17 in 2023 with 54 RBIs. However, he had 39 doubles and scored 66 runs in 140 games. Chapman has 92 Defensive Runs Saved in his career, including 12 DRS this year with Toronto...
"Best fits: Blue Jays, (New York Yankees), Mets, (Los Angeles Dodgers), (Chicago Cubs), and (Detroit Tigers). Contract prediction: six years, $127 million."
Chapman would be an intriguing pickup for the Mets. The one-time All-Star is one of the best defensive third basemen in baseball and immediately would improve the middle of New York's batting order. The Mets could pair Chapman with star slugger Pete Alonso and form a fearsome duo in the middle of the lineup.
This isn't the first time Chapman has been linked to the Mets and a move could be a real possibility this winter.
