Mets Reportedly Offered Contract To Free Agent All-Star Starting Pitcher
The New York Mets missed out on another free-agent starting pitcher Friday.
New York has been linked to multiple top free-agent starters this offseason but hasn't been able to swing a major deal yet. The Mets attempted to land former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto but the Los Angeles Dodgers nabbed him.
Since missing out on Yamamoto, the Mets seem to have turned their focus to former Washington Nationals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels, and Cleveland Guardians hurler Lucas Giolito. Although the Mets reportedly made Giolito made an offer, they missed out on him to the Boston Red Sox, according to Newsday Sports' Tim Healey.
"The Mets were among the most aggressive teams trying to sign Lucas Giolito and indeed made an offer, per source," Healey said. "But he decided on the Red Sox (and a contract that makes a lot of sense for both parties). One fewer rotation fit on the board."
New York has made some much-needed upgrades this offseason by landing former All-Stars Joey Wendle and Luis Severino but has a lot more work to do. Luckily for the Mets there still are some top options still available in free agency, but the club clearly will need to act quickly if they want to get a deal done.
The Mets -- like many clubs -- still need to improve their starting rotation this offseason. New York will have plenty of competition for the top starters left -- like Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell -- and needs to act quickly.
