Mets Reportedly Showing Interest In Pair Of Top Starters Remaining In Free Agency
The New York Mets have plenty of work to do after missing out on former Orix Buffaloes ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
New York needs to add to its starting rotation after trading away Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander. The Mets already have brought in former New York Yankees All-Star Luis Severino but need to make a few more additions.
The Mets tried to bring in Yamamoto but he chose the Los Angeles Dodgers. There still are some intriguing starters available like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, but it sounds like there are some hurlers the club is looking into.
New York reportedly has its eyes on starters Shōta Imanaga and Lucas Giolito, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"The Mets have been linked more to the next tier of free-agent starters, including Shōta Imanaga and Lucas Giolito, but it’s worth wondering whether deep-pocketed owner Steve Cohen would accept entering the season — Pete Alonso’s walk year — as only a marginally competitive team," Heyman said.
Imanaga and Giolito would be intriguing pickups. If the Mets could land one of the duo, it would be a solid start to improving the rotation. If New York could somehow land both of the starters, it would be in a very good place.
Giolito is an intriguing bounce-back candidate and Imanaga was a star for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. It's unclear how much the Mets will be willing to spend, but it's clear that they are at least looking into some of the top options available.
