MLB Insider Makes Intriguing Prediction About Mets' Top Free Agent Choice's Future
The New York Mets are looking to make one massive splash this offseason.
New York has spent in a major way over the last few offseasons but likely will be more conservative this offseason. Although this is the case, the Mets still are looking to make one major move.
The Mets are looking to make a major addition to the starting rotation. New York is looking to add Orix Buffaloes star Yoshinobu Yamamoto and has been heavily pursuing him.
Mets owner Steven Cohen even recently had dinner with Yamamoto in his home with a contingent of New York staff. There have been rumblings that Yamamoto could land with big clubs like the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees. But, MLB Network's Steve Phillips seems to believe that if Yamamoto is coming to New York, it will be with the Mets and not the Yankees.
"People keep saying it's (Los Angeles Dodgers) and (New York Yankees) but I keep thinking that if he makes the decision that he's okay to come to New York, he's going to be a Met," Phillips said. "First off, you have Kodai Senga there and the Mets did a really nice job assimilating Senga into the rotation last year. He had a fantastic season.
"The other thing is if it comes down to money, Steve Cohen is going to have one more dollar available than Hal Steinbrenner. They will have one more dollar available to go out and spend. I found it interesting Yamamoto went to meet with the Mets for a dinner at Steve Cohen's house and then they scrambled to put together a meeting with the Yankees while he was there. It seemed like meeting with the Mets was a priority."
If the Mets could land Yamamoto, it could end up being one of the biggest deals in team history. The 25-year-old star is expected to be one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball from day one. Now, we just have to wait for a decision.
