New York Mets Attend Zack Britton's Showcase
They might not be done adding to their bullpen.
The Mets were among the teams to attend free agent left-handed reliever Zack Britton's showcase on Wednesday, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
In addition to the Mets, the other teams in attendance included the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Britton returned to the Yankees last September from Tommy John surgery, but landed on the IL after making just three appearances as a result of arm fatigue.
According to SNY's Andy Martino, the Mets were looking for optionable relievers, as opposed to veterans like Britton. But on Wednesday, Martino reported that the Mets could make an exception for Britton.
"Fully understand the Mets preference for flexibility/optionable relievers," Martino tweeted. "Zack Britton, however, is a special person for a team’s culture, helping bridge gaps between a FO and clubhouse, vets and young players, analytics and more. Huge intangibles."
Britton, 35, was one of baseball's best relievers prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery late in the 2021 season.
Britton was one of the best closers in baseball during his time with the Baltimore Orioles and became a premier setup man for the Yankees after he got traded in 2018.
The Mets have five high-leverage relievers in their bullpen, who are locks to crack the Opening Day roster: Edwin Diaz, David Robertson, Adam Ottavino, Brooks Raley and Drew Smith.
Beyond this group, John Curtiss, Tommy Hunter, Zach Greene, Stephen Ridings, Elieser Hernandez, Jeff Brigham and Stephen Nogosek will be fighting for the remaining spots in the bullpen.
