New York Mets Closer Edwin Diaz Suffers leg Injury After World Baseball Classic Celebration
A scary moment.
Mets closer Edwin Diaz went down with a right leg injury after celebrating Team Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night at LoanDepot Park.
Diaz, who closed out the 5-2 victory, struck out Teoscar Hernandez to end the game. The righty walked off the mound clapping before being met by teammates, who started jumping up and down in celebration.
Just moments afterward, his teammates started motioning towards the dugout for assistance, as Diaz sat on the ground with his right leg extended. This stopped all celebrations, with players from both teams showing concern.
Diaz was eventually helped off the field and put in a wheelchair, which rolled down the concourse beneath the stands.
Diaz's brother, Reds pitcher Alexis, was seen crying with his arm around a teammate.
"I think it was the right knee, I think he is being treated in the ballpark," Puerto Rico manager and former big-league catcher Yadier Molina said. "We don't know yet.
SNY's Andy Martino reported that Diaz is headed for X-Rays on his leg.
The Mets later announced that Diaz injured his right knee and will undergo imaging on Thursday.
All of Mets nation is holding their breath and hoping that their elite closer is going to be alright.
Stay tuned for further updates on Diaz's injury situation.
