The young gun will get a chance to prove himself.

With catcher Omar Narvaez landing on the IL with a high-grade calf strain, top prospect Francisco Alvarez is expected to be called up to the major league roster to replace him.

Narvaez is expected to miss 8-9 weeks with his injury, which means Alvarez should get plenty of playing time in his absence.

Alvarez is the Mets' No. 1 ranked prospect in their farm system and the No. 2 ranked prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline

Alvarez was off to a hot start for Triple-A Syracuse, posting a 1.056 OPS and two home runs in his first 16 at-bats.

The 21-year-old catcher was called up to the big-leagues during the final week of the regular season last year, and hit his first career home run.

Alvarez was included on the Mets' NL Wild Card roster, going 0-for-1 in limited action.

With Alvarez set to be called up ahead of the Mets' home opener against the Marlins, he will now get a chance to prove himself in extended action while Narvaez is on the shelf for the next two months.
