Mets' Kodai Senga Expects to be Ready for 1st Regular Season Start
He's optimistic.
Despite being scratched from his scheduled outing on Saturday due to tendinitis in his right index finger, Mets pitcher Kodai Senga said he expects to be ready for his first start of the regular season.
According to Senga, he believes he is able to throw right now, but he is just being cautious with his finger given the fact that we're still in Spring Training.
Mets manager Buck Showalter also expressed optimism that Senga won't be down from throwing for too long.
"It shouldn't be very long, I hope," Showalter told reporters before the Mets' Grapefruit League matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays. "It's just precautionary, but we know how that goes sometimes...I think tomorrow is a big day, seeing how the treatments are going with him."
The Mets are hoping that Senga's injury isn't too serious as they can't afford to lose another starter to the shelf. Fellow rotation mate Jose Quintana was recently diagnosed with a stress fracture in his rib and his timetable and severity are currently unknown as the team awaits additional information from the doctors.
The good news is that Senga is confident that he can pitch through his finger tendinitis. Time will tell whether that is actually the case.
