MLB Insider Speaks on Showalter's Job Security With New York Mets
The seat might be a bit cooler now that the New York Mets are in the midst of a five-game winning streak.
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, prior to the Mets' recent win streak, manager Buck Showalter's job did not appear to be secure.
Rosenthal wrote:
"Yes, he was NL Manager of the Year just last season, but before the Mets’ current five-game winning streak, with every victory by one run, Showalter did not necessarily appear secure. Such is life for the manager of the most expensive team in major-league history, under an owner whose level of patience likely does not match his desire to win."
"While Showalter, who turns 67 on Tuesday, is under contract through next season, Steve Cohen figures to make significant changes if the season ends badly. The recent performances of the Baby Mets helped revitalize the club, but so much depends upon Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, both of whom pitched brilliantly in Sunday’s doubleheader sweep of the (Cleveland) Guardians."
Showalter led the Mets to 101 wins in his first season as skipper last year. This season, the team began 14-7 before a horrid 6-16 stretch, dropping their record to 20-23. Luckily, the Mets have been able to get on a roll as of late, taking two of three from the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays, as well as sweeping the Guardians.
As long as the Mets continue to play like they're capable of performing then Showalter's job will be safe. But if they have a down year and don't make the playoffs, despite having the highest payroll in MLB history, like Rosenthal said, changes will likely be made.
