Veteran MLB Insider Has Bold Prediction For Mets' Offseason Plans
At this point, there's no way for sure to know what the New York Mets will do this offseason.
New York has started things early by hiring new president of baseball operations David Stearns but it's still unclear what direction the club will go in. The Mets won 101 games in 2022 but underwhelmed in a major way this season. Some have speculated the Mets could be a few years away from contention and therefore have a slow offseason. Others have said the opposite and expect the Mets to spend big once again.
It's unclear what will happen, but The Athletic's Jim Bowden predicted the Mets will still pursue the top players available -- like Shohei Ohtani -- even if they won't be World Series contenders in 2024.
"Although the Mets are probably a year or two away from World Series contention, I'll be surprised if they don't make a run at several top free agents, including Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto," Bowden said.
This isn't the first time New York has been mentioned as a fit for Ohtani or Yamamoto. Mets owner Steve Cohen has the money to spend and if he were to land either star they would significantly improve the club. If somehow New York could land both, it could easily be considered a World Series contender. That is extremely unlikely, but who knows what will happen.
It wouldn't be too surprising to see the Mets land either Ohtani or Yamamoto this offseason. Although 2023 didn't go as expected, Mets fans should at least have some hope for the club's future.
