As the San Diego Padres continue their open managerial search, the team has added another name to the discussion. That would be former Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin and the Padres officially interviewed him on Wednesday.

Nevin was let go by the Angels after about a year and a half as the Halos skipper. The Angels didn’t find much success on the field, but Nevin was loved by the players. He even had multiple guys pushing for him to return for another season, but the Angels front office felt it was time to move on.

The Padres have been narrowing their search, and President of Baseball Operations and General Manager A.J. Preller said that the team was hopeful to make a decision by early next week. The news of Nevin interviewing right after that is interesting, and it shows that they are very interested in him.

If hired, Nevin would have much more talent to work with in San Diego than he had with the Angels. He did as good of a job as he could with the Halos, but they couldn’t live up to the hype.

The Padres could use someone like Nevin to relate to the players more than their previous manager, Bob Melvin. Melvin is a very good manager, but he didn’t seem to connect with the players like Nevin did with the Angels.

This could be a solid pairing between the Friars and Nevin, and it would give him another chance to show what he can do. The Padres core of players likely intrigues Nevin, and he feels that he could get the most out of these guys after a disappointing 2023 season.

San Diego has a very interesting offseason ahead of them, but they must first find the person to lead them forward. They want to do whatever it takes to get back to the postseason, and they will be one of the more closely watched teams this winter.
