The will they or won’t they between the San Diego Padres and star outfielder Juan Soto continues on as the GM Meetings begin. The team has been weighing whether or not they will end up trading away their star player this offseason, and there has been a ton of noise surrounding the possibility.

Soto is entering the final year of his contract, and the Padres haven’t shown a major willingness to pay him what it would take to retain him long-term. This has led to many believing that the team will look to deal him this winter while his value is at its highest.

However, we may have a change of plans as his agent Scott Boras came out and said that Soto is definitely in the plans for the Padres for the 2024 season.

If the Padres do hold onto Soto, they could always trade him at the trade deadline if they plan to not resign him. But they also risk him having a down year or getting hurt prior to the deadline, and his value won’t be as high with only half a season left on his deal.

But losing Soto is something that the Padres may not want to do right now, and they would likely find it difficult to replace his production. He was still one of the more elite players across the big leagues this season, hitting .275 with 35 home runs and 109 runs batted in.

The Padres have plenty of options to work through this offseason, but figuring out what they want to do with Soto remains a priority. The team can move forward once they figure it out, and they can move toward getting themselves back into playoff contention.
