The San Diego Padres traded away bullpen arm Scott Barlow on Friday before the non-tender deadline expired in an effort to save some money heading into next season. The team has been wanting to shed salary on their payroll, and they were able to strike a deal.

The player that they got back actually has ties to the organization from his days in the minor league. They got back bullpen arm Enyel De Los Santos in exchange, and he spent time with the Padres years ago.

It's his second stint with the team, but he will likely make the big league roster this time around. He was traded from San Diego back in 2017 for infielder Freddy Galvis.

De Los Santos appeared in 70 games for the Cleveland Guardians in 2023, posting an ERA of 3.29. It was a very solid season for the pitcher, and he now will become a valuable member for the San Diego bullpen.

He was solid against right-handed batters, as they hit just .171 against him in 2023. De Los Santos has a three-pitch mix to his name and he uses his fastball to set up his off-speed stuff.

He was mainly a middle-inning reliever for Cleveland last season, and the Padres could use him in similar situations. But he saves the team a good amount of money while giving them a quality arm in the bullpen

De Los Santos also has a few years of control left, so the Padres now have themselves a bullpen guy for the next few years. It was a minor deal for San Diego, but one that could pay off massively depending on how the rest of the offseason shakes out.
