San Diego Padres pitcher Blake Snell has been on an incredible run of late.

That's not exactly a secret as he lowered his MLB-best ERA to 2.50 with five shutout innings of work against a formidable Texas Rangers lineup on Sunday.

But for the pitcher who clearly isn't letting persistent trade rumors bother him with the deadline looming on Tuesday afternoon, the heater he's on isn't just superb.

It's also historic.

Yeah, Blake Snell is on one of those stretches that we almost never see.

His work has been huge for a Padres team that simultaneously is trying to climb back into playoff position, while the front office is mulling whether to buy or sell at the upcoming deadline.

The Padres are just five games back in the chase for the National League's third wild card spot.

San Diego's brass has been "conflicted," according to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, about the big decision of whether to keep their hopes for the playoffs realistically alive or blow the entire operation up in what's been a largely disappointing year.

Snell has been one of the few bright spots on the diamond for the Padres this season, and he's one of the frontrunners for the Cy Young on the back of his most impressive few months.

But with his team in their shaky position, would they sacrifice their star lefty for a chance to build a better future?

We'll find out between now and Tuesday afternoon, but if Blake Snell is still in San Diego after the deadline, he'll try to keep putting up good outings and keep his team's chances for the postseason alive.
