Padres News: Bob Melvin Lays Out Early Offseason Plan as MLB Playoffs Ramp Up
With the San Diego Padres missing the playoffs, they will be taking a much earlier vacation than they expected. The team could never recover from their early season struggles, and it saw them trying to play catch up all year long.
Now, the Padres will look ahead to the offseason where they will have a chance to right the wrongs of the season. They have a lot of work to do to figure out what happened, and to make sure that it doesn’t happen in 2024.
Manager Bob Melvin spoke on his plans for the offseason, and how the team plans to move forward.
“It’s important to rest up, and you get a lot of clarity,” Melvin said. “You can be pretty emotional after the season. It takes me about a week to key down. … You get a lot of clutter (during the season). There is a little time and perspective to sift through what you think the issues were and and try to break them down a bit.”

Melvin was retained this week after much speculation about whether or not he would be back for the next season. It was thought that the team would find someone to put the blame of the disappointing season on, but Melvin now gets to be a part of the fix.
San Diego won 14 of their last 16 games to get close to a potential playoff spot, but they couldn’t get over the hump. It was an extremely frustrating year all around, and everyone in the clubhouse is pissed off about how things turned out.
“At the end of the season,” Melvin said, “you get an opportunity to talk about what you thought some differences were, differences of opinion, and you move forward.”

It should be an interesting offseason for the Padres, as they have a bunch of questions to answer. The entire league will be watching closely, as they try to figure out their path forward.
