Padres News: Bob Melvin Sees Similarities Between Mets and Friars in Tough Season

In this story:

As we get closer to the All-Star break in Major League Baseball, the two biggest disappointing teams of the season have to be the New York Mets and San Diego Padres

Both entered the season with World Series aspirations but have struggled to find any sort of consistency this season. But both squads have started playing a little better of late and are slowly rounding into form. So naturally, it's fitting that they are playing against each other to close out the schedule before the All-Star festivities begin.

The Mets took the opening game of the series in extra innings but the Padres aren't losing hope. Manager Bob Melvin gave his thoughts after the game as his team dropped to 0-8 in extra innings this season.

“It is what it is,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “I mean we can’t get past it. But I mean to give up four runs in the 10th, it’s going to be a tough one to come back from.”

Per The SD Union-Tribune

As the two teams continue their seasons, Melvin sees a ton of similarities between the two teams. Both are searching for any sort of rhythm and will try anything to get things back on track.

“It looks pretty similar,” Melvin said. “Both teams are playing a little bit better right now. Both teams would like to take this into the All-Star break … and have a nice second half. There are certain matchups over the course of the season, especially coming down to the break that are maybe more important than others.”

With the large payrolls that both sides have spent for this season, it has been a letdown to not see more on-field success from either. The Mets have dealt with some injuries but their main starting pitchers haven't exactly lit up the mound. As for the Padres, the pitching hasn't been the issue this season as their offense has been widely inconsistent.

There is still time for both the Mets and Padres to recover from their horrendous starts but the clock is ticking. They continue their series with two more games before heading into the All-Star break.
