As the trade deadline is now just three days away, the Padres are in a tricky position. They sit six games out of a spot in the National League Wild Card race and have struggled to put together winning streaks all season. Since the All-Star break, the Padres are 7-7, winning 7-1 last night against the Texas Rangers.

With upcoming free agents Blake Snell and Josh Hader both attracting attention in the trade market, rumors abound over whether the Padres will sell off at the deadline, signaling a surrender from the front office in a season that once saw the Padres among the favorites to win the World Series.

Amidst all the noise surrounding the Friars, those taking the field every day are becoming frustrated with the trade deadline drama.

In an interview following their win over the Rangers, Manny Machado was asked if the victory felt significant due to them being in "desperation time."

"We're not desperate in here. We're taking it one day at a time. Until we're out we're out," Machado said. "We need to win games, plain and simple. Don't put words out there. ... We're going to go out there every single night and play our best baseball."

Machado had a slow start to the season, hitting .217 in June with only one home run. He began to improve in June, but it wasn't until July that he started posting impressive numbers that you would expect to see from Machado.

With a .301 batting average and 1.121 OPS, Machado has made a difference this month. It's not a coincidence that the Padres have also had their best month, winning 13 of 22 games in July.

The Padres' players likely know that there is work to do if they want to reach the playoffs and overcome what has been a disappointing season. So don't call San Diego desperate, or at least don't let Manny Machado hear you do so.
