The Padres won 4-0 Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, winning the overall four-game series in their last home matchup against their rivals from the north for the 2023 season.

As it stands at the time of this writing, the Padres are 5.5 games behind the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Giants and Reds for the final spot in the crowded National League Wild Card race.

After losing the first game of the series, Manny Machado said the team took time to focus on improving.

“We had a terrible game as a group Thursday, and I think we just regrouped,” Machado said. “We talked and said, ‘We’re better than that.’ … There is always gonna be a winner, there is gonna be a loser, and we can’t really control that. But we can go out there and play better baseball, and the next couple of days we did that.”

While the Padres currently are missing several key players, such as starting pitchers Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove — who might be out for the season, Machado said the team was hoping for a miracle.

“There’s always time until we’re out,” Machado said. “We’re waiting for that miracle, and the only people that can handle that is us. We can make it happen. We just gotta believe in it and believe in each other.”

Making the playoffs will be an almost Herculean task for the Padres. Series coming up against the Phillies, Astros and Dodgers — all teams with a record comfortably over .500 — await San Diego. One would think that they must go at least 7-2 in those nine games to have a shot at continuing to reach for a miracle.
