Padres News: MLB Insider Predicts Blake Snell's Next Contract
The upcoming MLB free agent class looks to feature some real heavy hitters. Most notably, Shohei Ohtani as he highlights this coming free agency class. But there are still plenty of quality players that will be available, and one of them is San Diego Padres ace, Blake Snell.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report made a list of top free agents for this winter and predicted contracts for them, including Snell.
"It feels like Snell has been around for forever, but he's still only 30 years old and could be headed for another five-year deal worth double his previous $50 million one."
Per Bleacher Report
Snell has been great for the Padres since they acquired him via trade a few seasons ago. He has helped solidify the starting rotation and gives the team a chance to win every night out. So far this season, he has posted an ERA of 3.78 and has punched out 81 over 69 innings pitched. But recently, he has been on a tear.
Over his last four starts, Snell has only allowed two runs over 24 innings pitched. It has seen his ERA drop, and his quality starts have risen.
Surely the Padres would love to retain Snell but at what cost? The team has shelled out loads of money to other players and may be unable to justify paying Snell what he wants or deserves. He is still only 30 years old and is in the middle of his prime, so he could command a competitive salary.
The former CY Young award winner will likely have many suitors this off-season. He has enjoyed his time with the Padres, but he may be priced out for their sake. Only time will tell, but for now, he remains committed to helping the team reach their goal of winning a World Series.
