The Padres had a tough series over the weekend as they dropped multiple games to the Philadelphia Phillies — but they also had a minor scare when star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. injured his ankle. He left the game on Saturday in the sixth inning and his status was up in the air for Sunday.

But a rain delay prior to the start of the game allowed him extra time to rest and he was able to pinch-hit.

It ended up being a positive situation for the Padres as Tatis Jr. entered the game on Sunday with two outs in the eighth inning and proceeded to tie the game with a hit. He credited the training staff after the matchup for attacking the injury while the three-hour delay was going on.

“It was a long process this morning,” Tatis said Sunday. “We were checking it out. We had a delay, so we had more time to get some treatment and just feel better. The medical team attacked it really well.”

Unfortunately, the Padres dropped the game, but their star was okay. That was the most important outcome from the weekend and now the Friars can move forward. They don’t have the luxury of time to keep losing games so for Tatis Jr., it’s full-go time and he expects to bounce back.

“I’ll be fine,” Tatis said. “I feel good. I feel confident, especially with the off day tomorrow. It’s gonna be a good day to bounce back.”

The Padres head to Toronto for a matchup with the Blue Jays starting Tuesday. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Friars are going to need to get things going if they want to stay in contention enough to justify making a run for things.
