Padres News: Xander Bogaerts Forgives Star Teammate for Ending Historic Streak
Paders superstar Xander Bogaert's historic on-base streak came to an end on Wednesday. However, it didn't end in a traditional way. The 30-year-old All-Star lost his streak at the hands of his own teammate, superstar Juan Soto and a misread of the ball.
Here's how his streak ended.
Boagerts "singled" to right field as it dropped in front of Reds' right fielder Stuart Fairchild's glove. Soto thought he had caught it and, without realizing that, he made his way back to first but had touched second base already. Rule 7.08(e) states,
If the forced runner, after touching the next base, retreats for any reason towards the base he had last occupied, the force play is reinstated, and he can again be put out if the defense tags the base to which he is forced.
It's a lot to comprehend, but because of that rule, Bogaerts "hit" didn't count as such. Bogaerts spoke to the media about it after the game and wasn't discouraged by the end of the streak.
“It’s baseball,” Bogaerts said. “You never know what to expect. Every day is different. … Obviously, Soto didn’t want to do it on purpose. I’ll get more [hits].”
These kinds of stuff happen. It sucks that his streak came to an end like that, but now he has the opportunity to start another streak. More importantly, the Padres are streaking and are looking to ride that wave.
