Padres News: Yu Darvish Reacts to Contract Extension

Last week, Padres All-Star RHP Yu Darvish agreed to a six-year, $108 million contract extension that will keep him in San Diego through 2028. The extension came as a bit of a surprise, not because it happened, but because of how many years Darvish received.
The deal is going to take Darvish until he's 42 years old, paying him $14 million per season in his 40s. Even he was surprised that the deal was actually being offered to him.
But while the extension may not be conventional, it only further proved how committed the Padres are to winning, and moreover, keeping their core intact.
After signing the extension, Darvish took to Twitter to thank the team and his fans for the support.
"I am honored to be able to come to terms on a new contract with the San Diego Padres. I am truly grateful for the support from the fans, team, teammates, and staff."

The Padres have proved time and time again that they're committed to spending big money to win, and in this case, it was no different. And now that Darvish is locked in, their next task is figuring out how to keep superstar third baseman Manny Machado in the brown and gold for the foreseeable future.
Darvish even said that he took a lower average annual value to try to leave the Friars with enough money to sign Machado. However, with how much money the Padres have thrown at players over the last few years, I don't think they'll have any trouble paying up to keep Machado long-term.
