It hasn't been the 2023 that Padres fans were hoping for when their front office shelled out money left and right and built what appeared to be a flawless, championship-worthy roster.

With a week to go until the Aug. 1 trade deadline, the Padres sit four games behind .500 and six games out of playoff contention. Unless San Diego is able to string together some wins, it could be a dark day in a typically sunny city.

If the Padres do decide to throw in the towel on the 2023 season, they have some prime trade pieces that would bring in a haul for next season and beyond. Starting pitcher Blake Snell and closer Josh Hader, both playing some of the best baseball of their careers, would be on the top of many contenders' wish lists were they made available.

Snell holds a 2.67 ERA with a WHIP of 1.28 in 20 starts. He has been consistently great all season and is among the favorites to win the National League Cy Young award.

Hader is having the best season of his career. The five-time All-Star holds an 0.97 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP, while recording 24 saves.

MLB.com's AJ Cassavell thinks that the Padres should keep their championship hopes alive and trade for a middle deliver and another bat. However, Cassavell thinks San Diego should be prepared for the worst.

"But the Padres also need to be ready for a major sell-off. If they sputter and find themselves fully out of contention, it's time to pivot and recoup serious value on two elite rental pieces: Josh Hader and Blake Snell."

The Padres have one week to decide what to do on Aug. 1. In that time, they will face the Pirates, Rangers, and Rockies.
