In this story:

The San Diego Padres are certainly in need of some help and that is not something that we thought were gong to be saying midway through the 2023 season. With many top MLB experts predicting the Friars to be their team to win the NL West, it is pretty crazy to see how things have progressed and how their playoff chances slip further and further away from them.

As of late, we've seen a number of series get away from them that they really had no business losing. Team manager Bob Melvin appears to be running out of options as the number of lineup changes he's attempted haven't really produced much success. Therefore, we just may see a Friars squad that is aggressive at the trade deadline for the second year in a row.

On the other side of things, though, what if the Padres continue to fall out of the race altogether? Could we see them ... sell?

MLB insider Jon Heyman thinks it's at least a possibility:

"The Padres, as disappointing as the Mets, may have to consider pivoting to sell. If so, free agents to be Blake Snell and Josh Hader would be huge targets."

The Padres might have to consider the possibility of selling, or at the very least, shipping off some of their players on expiring deals to retool their gutted farm system.

And if they do decide to do that, the red-hot Blake Snell and top reliever Josh Hader could be great options.

There's a lack of sellers on the market right now, so pitchers will be at a premium. The Padres would be able to get a haul for both Snell and Hader, and get at least something for them before potentially losing them for nothing in the offseason.

No matter what happens, expect the Padres to be active this trade deadline. But, it's pretty crazy to think we're even entertaining the idea of them selling considering where their expectations were to open the year.
