Padres Rumors: Insider Links Bob Melvin as Potential Managerial Candidate for NL Team
After a very frustrating season, the San Diego Padres can now look ahead to the future of the organization. They finally were eliminated from postseason contention, and now the real questions begin.
The team will need to decide what to do going forward to make sure that nothing like this season happens again. It remains to be seen what exactly that looks like, but there has been plenty of talk about the possibility of moving on from manager Bob Melvin.
If the team does move on from Melvin, they would be opening themselves him possibly going to one of their biggest contending teams in the National League. Jon Heyman of The New York Post is reporting that Melvin could be on the radar of the New York Mets if he becomes available over the winter.
“Could Padres manager Bob Melvin be a possibility for the Mets? They pursued him before he chose the Padres for geographic reasons.”
Per Jon Heyman of The NY Post
The Mets themselves were also one of the biggest disappointments in baseball this season, and they could look to move on from their own manager. Melvin would be a good fit for the Mets since they already have a good foundation in place. He won a ton of games as the manager of the Oakland Athletics, and the Mets could use his leadership.
While he didn’t find much success in San Diego, Melvin is still a pretty good manager. He puts his guys into a position to succeed, and the Mets have unlimited resources at their disposal to give him a good team to work with.
San Diego would need to be convinced that they could find a better manager than Melvin if they were to let him go. If they can't do that, then they better hold onto him for another year, and hope that they can put together a more complete team for next season. The Padres have a ton of questions to answer this offseason, and they will need to get real with how this organization is run.
