The San Diego Padres have officially non-tendered four players on Friday, in addition to trading RHP Scott Barlow to the Cleveland Guardians.

The team non-tendered catcher Austin Nola, outfielder Taylor Kohlwey, left-handed pitcher Tim Hill and right-handed pitcher Jose Espada.

Nola struggled mightily in 2023 in what was by far his worst year as a pro. He hit just .146 with one home run and eight RBIs in 52 games. He ended up falling out of the regular lineup, and many San Diego fans wanted him out even sooner.

Hill also had an extremely rough 2023 season, his worst in the MLB. Hill had a career-worst 5.48 ERA in 48 appearances, and will now head back to the open market as he enters his age-34 season.

Kohlwey appeared in just five games and had 13 at-bats for the Padres this season. He got two hits and struck out five times.

Finally, Espada made just one appearance for the Friars in 2023 — his MLB debut — in which he walked two, struck out two and allowed zero runs.

The Padres shed about $9 million in salary by moving on from these five players and bringing back RHP Enyel De Los Santos from Cleveland.
