New Stadium Agreement for Athletics in Las Vegas
The Oakland Athletics have reportedly entered into an agreement with Bally’s to build their new Las Vegas stadium on the site of one of the Strip’s most iconic hotels.
The Nevada Independent reported that the two parties have agreed that the park will be built on a site that includes part of the property where the Tropicana Hotel is located. That would put the new park on the southern side of the Las Vegas Strip, one of the busiest tourist areas in the country.
The move would allow the city to build a retractable roof stadium. It would also save money, a reported $105 million less in public funding than the deal the A’s made last month with Red Rock Resorts. The pair had a binding agreement, so it’s not clear how this reported deal with Bally’s impacts that deal.
That deal, also for a new 35,000-seat stadium, would have been down the street from Allegiant Stadium, which is the home of the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders were formerly in Oakland as well.
The deal with Red Rock required $500 million in public funding.
The Athletics hope to break ground next year and, assuming the Nevada Legislature approves, hope to be ready to play for the 2027 MLB season. The legislature has to approve the deal before their session ends in June.
Assuming the Athletics follow through, Oakland would be without major professional sports. The Golden State Warriors moved to a new arena in San Francisco a few years ago.
The Athletics (8-30) are hosting the Texas Rangers in a four-game series that starts Thursday.
