Corey Seager, Nathan Eovaldi Lead Texas Rangers Past Tigers
Corey Seager drove in four runs and Nathan Eovaldi delivered another solid start, as the Texas Rangers blanked the Detroit Tigers 5-0 to open up a series at Comerica Park.
The American League West-leading Rangers (34-19) moved back to 15 games over .500 and clinched a winning record on the nine-game road trip. Texas is 5-2 on the trek with two games left before returning to Arlington.
Eovaldi continued his incredible run despite falling just shot of eighth consecutive quality start, going five innings and not allowing a run. Eovaldi (7-2) also ran his personal winning streak to six and lowered his ERA to 2.42.
The pitch count got away from Eovaldi a bit, as he worked around four hits and three walks on 95 pitches. He also maneuvered around a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the second. The right-hander came into the game averaging a MLB-best 6.9 innings per start.
Seager put the Rangers on the board with a three-run blast to right-center in the fifth off Detroit starter Matthew Boyd. The shortstop’s fifth shot of the season traveled 400 feet, scoring Robbie Grossman and Marcus Semien. Seager added a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Semien saw his hitting streak extend to a career-high 18 games with a single in the ninth and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. Josh Jung extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games.
Texas relievers Brock Burke, Jonathan Hernández and José Leclerc combined for four shutout innings.
The Rangers made a few roster moves before the game, notably sending down Sunday’s starter Cody Bradford and calling up reliever Grant Anderson from Triple-A Round Rock.
The three-game series continue Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. with Martín Pérez (6-1, 3.83) starting for Texas and Alex Faedo (1-2, 4.15) going for the Tigers.
