Texas Rangers Claim Tigers Series, Fail to Sweep

Dane Dunning lost his first game of the season while two Texas Rangers extended hitting streaks in Wednesday's loss at the Detroit Tigers.

The Texas Rangers lost their series finale with the Detroit Tigers 3-2 at Comerica Park on Wednesday.

It was the final game of a three-game series with the Tigers (26-28) and the end of a nine-game road trip. Texas went 6-3 and claimed all three series.

The American League West-leading Rangers (35-20) had already won the series, which marked the second time the team won four straight series this season. It was also the sixth straight road series the Rangers have won this season, a first in franchise history.

The Rangers have now won 13 series and it took them until mid-August of last season to accomplish that feat.

Right-hander Dane Dunning (4-1) returned to pitch for the first time since the birth of his son and took his first loss of the season.

He pitched five-plus innings, giving up seven hits, three runs and a walk while striking out six. He left the game with the Rangers and Tigers tied, 1-1, but he was responsible for the two Tigers on base.

His relief, Jonathan Hernández, was unable to get him out of the jam and gave up two hits that allowed the Tigers to take a 3-1 lead.

The Rangers cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh on a single by first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, scoring Robbie Grossman. But the Rangers were unable to get the tying run.

Lowe and Corey Seager both went 2-for-5, while Josh Jung went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Marcus Semien had one hit to extend his career-high hitting streak to 20 games.

Will Vest (2-0) took the win for the Tigers, while Alex Lange worked the ninth for his 10th save.

The Rangers are off Thursday before starting a six-game homestand on Friday with a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners. The Rangers have set their probable rotation for the series.

Jon Gray (5-1, 281), who gets an extra day of rest with the return of Dunning to the rotation, will face the Mariners' Luis Castillo (4-2, 2.69) at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Globe Life Field.

Andrew Heaney (4-3, 3.76) goes Saturday for the Rangers against Marco Gonzales (4-1, 5.22). Sunday's finale features the Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi (7-2, 2.42), with Bryce Miller (3-2, 3.00) going for Seattle.
