Texas Rangers Prospect Owen White Leads Frisco to Victory
Pitching prospect Owen White earned his first victory of the season as the Frisco RoughRiders defeated the Arkansas Travelers 9-5 on Wednesday in his third start of the season for the Texas Rangers’ Double-A affiliate.
White built on his start last week, which turned into a no-decision as he wasn’t able to get out of the fifth inning.
Against the Travelers, White threw five complete innings, giving up three runs (all earned). Two of those runs came in the second inning, giving Arkansas a 2-0 lead. Frisco regained the lead for good with a five-run third inning.
White gave up a run in the top of the fifth before he exited the game.
Along with the three runs, he gave up six hits and three walks. He also struck out three hitters. His performance dropped his season ERA to 2.13.
John Matthews came on in relief and earned a hold, while Marc Church and Triston Polley came on later.
White is the Rangers’ No. 3 overall prospect, per MLB.com.
White had a successful season last year at both High Class-A Hickory and Frisco. Overall he went 9-2 with a 3.59 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts). He struck out 104, walked 23 and allowed hitters to bat .233 against him.
When he was promoted to Frisco last July he was named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week after his first start but was shelved a majority of the season with an injury. He returned and finished the regular season 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts. He threw two perfect innings of relief and struck out all six hitters in the Riders’ Texas League-clinching victory.
The Rangers drafted White out of high school in 2018 and paid $1.5 million to sign the second-round pick.
